Ballet barre - Musicality

In my class, i will always ask my clients to 'open up' their ears and heart, listen to the music and move.

Musicality is knowledge about and sensitivity to music. In dance, it refers to how the dancer executes movement in relation to music. Executing movement that is technically correct and in time to the music is the baseline of performance. As you progress, you not only dance in time to the music but also use the music to express the qualities of both the movement and music to understand musicality.

Enjoy the music in class!

Ballet barre - Movement memory

I often say in my barre class that doing ballet in adulthood is really good for our brain too. Love to challenge my clients to think, exercise our brain in ballet class, i call it brain game for ballet babes.

Movements you perform in class are based on movement memory, also called muscle memory, which connects to developing your kinesthetic sense. After several months of attending ballet barre classes, you will be more familiarise with ballet movements like plie, tendue exercises.

This type of memory incorporates continued feedback to the basic movement to clarify the sequence of the legs or alter the arms and head in an exercise or step. Later, movement memory expands as exercises and combinations get longer, contain more steps, and increasingly become more complex. After practising many repetitions of a movement, you can execute the movement without thinking of the different parts, yet you are able to apply feedback or add stylistic elements to enhance the movement into a more sophisticated performance.

Keep dancing, keep practising. Stay beautiful!

AT THE BARRE: Port De Bras

Literally means 'carriage of arms'. A simple movement of the arms to different positions, dancers work hard to make it seem graceful, poised and seamless.

A simple port de bras, commence from bras bra, to 1st position, to 5th position, to 2nd position, back to bras bra.

Good exercise for beginners to feel their back's strength while maintaining the arm positions, shoulders should be kept down, particularly in 5th position when it is very easy to hunch them.

The elbow should never be allowed to cave in and should always be supported.

The wrist should also be supported in all positions and never be allowed to flap either up or down.

The fingers are held closely together with the thumb pulled slightly towards the palm of the hand.

In general, visually beautiful soft clear line should be practised from shoulder to fingertips, controlled but never strained in appearance.

Ballet barre - Understanding artistry

In my adult ballet classes, as i see my clients progressing in technique, i started to introduce the meaning of expressive movement, getting them to dance more expressively.

Artistry means being able to express the intent of the dance, the choreographer's ideas, and emotions through ballet movements and gestures with the music. In the context of my barre classes, even simple movement at the barre can be beautifully expressed.

I enjoy seeing my clients feel good after class, holistically, feeling wonderful both physically and mentally. Similar to reading a great poem, seeing a riveting dramatic performance, listening to a piece of music that move your spirit, or viewing a work of art that connects to your senses, a dance artist visually expresses through the fullness and elegance of movements and gestures in relations with music that accompanies the performance- the poetry, emotion, and drama of the dance.

If i succeed in inspiring my clients to enjoy ballet as a from of art, it brings so much meaning to me.

Benefits of taking ballet lessons as adult

TOP 7 BENEFITS OF BALLET LESSONS FOR ADULTS

Here are a few benefits of Ballet Lessons for Adults:-

1) Ballet is not just for the athletic, the artistic, or the young. Homemakers, physicists, philanthropists, lawyers, secretaries- ballet is more popular than ever among people of all métier, all ages.

2) Ballet offers both a break from daily life and a challenge with its own distinct mental and physical rewards.

3) In class you become a part of the grace and beauty you see onstage, and it becomes part of you.

4) Ballet also provides a great workout, with lasting benefits of toning, lengthening, and stretching. Every inch of your muscle will be actively engaged in movements. We will teach you feel the muscle you never thought you can control! You will end up shedding a few pounds and have a well-toned up body.

5) Another benefit is you will find ballet does wonders to your posture!

6) Ballet, actually make you smarter and prevent Alzheimer! In ballet, we listen and move along with music, you will use a lot of ‘brain power’ to remember the steps, keep up with the music timing, and coordinate the different body parts. For example, we exercise the left brain for getting the logic of the steps combinations; Right brain for interpreting the music and expressing our body in an artistic manner; The upper rear portion of the brain for interpreting spatial relationship; and the lower part of the brain for memorizing the steps.

7) No dress code in adult class. Wear a T-shirt/wrap sweater and sweatpants/a skirt in which you can move freely. As you progress, you may find yourself gaining confidence and shedding pounds- and a layer or two of clothing along with them.

Ballet barre streching

Benefits of ballet stretching

Ballet barre exercise, stretching is a crucial aspect of training.

Regular stretching of the body improves flexibility and motion of your joints it also improves circulation and helps to prevent injury.

Whether you’re a professional ballerina, athlete, beginner or intermediate in doing ballet barre, the long list of benefits associated with stretching have extremely positive impact on your body training.

  1. Increased flexibility. It increases the ability to move freely and easily and to perform everyday activities.
  2. Better muscle condition. It enhances athletic performance. In tennis, squash, volleyball, and swimming, greater range of motion and ability to apply force through that range of motion can confer a winning edge.
  3. Burning calories
  4. Releasing toxins
  5. Prevent injury. It may decrease the risk of injury
  6. A great way to relax. It feels good. Stretching reduces muscular tension, promotes relaxation.
  7. Anti aging effect. It counteracts age-related declines in flexibility.

Here is a basic rules i like to get my clients to follow when stretching:

B- Breath
Maintain steady deep breathing throughout.
“Inhale and exhale”

E- Ease into position
Do not force yourself into a stretch. You should always feel a slight pull when stretching but not a burning tear. Ease into the stretched position, do not rush into it, and slowly apply more pressure to get a nice stretch.
H- Hold for 30 seconds
Always stretch both sides of your body and hold for an even amount of time (ideally 20-30 seconds each position)

P- Patience
Hold longer for progression and development. Take your time in letting your body gain flexibility over time of practise. If you push too hard, too fast, you are stretching yourself to tears, may be doing more damage than good to your body.

P- Perseverance
Be consistent with stretching everyday, persevere and keep going.

W- Warmed-up
Always stretch when body is fully warmed up.
